  Wolverine (Gulo Gulo)

Wolverine
The Animal Wolverine

The wolverine inhabits Canada, and also the northern United States, Sibera, Alaska and Northern Europe.

This large land animal stands about 18 inches tall, and is around 45 inches in length. They weigh about 35 pounds, and the males are larger than the females.

They have a thick coat of brown fur which protect the animal during cold winters. They have very sharp claws on their large paws, which cannot fully retract but do so a small amount. Their large paws help them move through the snow. They also have very large sharp teeth.

Amazing Animal Fact: The Wolverine has a scent gland as skunks do. They use this to mark their territory.

Wolverine's belong to the same family as skunks (Scientific family: Mustelidae).

The wolverine will feed on almost any food source available. They often hunt and kill small animals such as rats or mice, but are known to also feed on large prey such as reindeer. The wolverine is also a cunning animal, and will often witness another animal hunting and killing its prey. At this point, the wolverine will confront the hunting animal, and growl at the other animal. The other animal leaves the wolverine's territory and the wolverine is left to feast on the fresh kill.

Did you know? A new born wolverine is called a kitten!

Wolverine's give birth to a litter of two or three kittens. The female wolverine gives birth on average about once in three years.

Wolverine's are great climbers, and can climb trees to find a vantage point. They will rest here, but will happily pounce out of trees onto their prey.
